Fifty years ago On This Day, in only his second F1 start, rising star Roger Williamson perished in a disgracefully preventable incident at the Dutch Grand Prix. Failed by the complacent belief that Zandvoort was a "safe" circuit, Williamson crashed and became trapped in his upturned, burning March; despite the heroic efforts of fellow driver David Purley, marshals were not equipped to extinguish or approach the car to right it.
