Representation matters. I believe this to be true in every industry. Even more in leadership roles. I was offered a Lead Brewer role at the Centre St. location a few months ago and turned it down several times. It was a bit overwhelming, unsure if I could succeed. The expectations of a management role in production for OH are very high. I mean we are brewing your juiciest, crunchiest, coconutiest, chocolatiest beers after all. How could I lead? Where would I begin. So, I had to check myself. What’s the whole point of trying to empower women of color in this industry if I am failing to empower myself? How can I encourage Latinas to keep going if I’m telling myself to stop right there? Seriously. What was I thinking? Listen, promotions can be scary. But damn it, this felt right. I am standing alongside other Chingonas in this industry who are in lead brewing roles. And one day, I’ll be standing alongside those same Chingonas in Head Brewer roles.
