I often get asked for advice on how to get started in brewing. What books they should read or how to go about getting hired. I never have the right thing to say because I’m not sure what I have to suggest is helpful. But, the same question keeps getting asked so here I go: 1. If you want to become a Brewer never stepping foot in a brewery then you first want to ask yourself how much you want to put your body through, and if you’re okay with the following: Burns, cuts, bruises, back aches, concussions, stitches, eye injuries, broken bones…etc. I don’t care how careful you are, shit will happen. 2. Still want to become a brewer? Ok. Next step is to know the industry. Visit breweries. Befriend the bar staff and the Brewers. They’ll eventually need help in FOH or BOH. Whatever they’re offering, take it and work your way up. I don’t care if it’s a bar back position or keg washer. Just take it and work your way up. 3. Ok, so you’re in. Now what? Ask all of the fucking questions and don’t...
