We all feel nervous before marathons.
I have run 7 of them and still get nervous.
What time should I wake up? What should I eat? What do I wear? What is my body going to feel like? What will I be thinking about? Is it going to hurt?
We ALL have these thoughts.
What has helped me the most dealing with these feelings of anxiety is using a training run as a type of dress rehearsal.
Every marathon cycle, I pick a workout and try to do everything the same as what I would do before a race (within reason).
My morning race rehearsal routine:
1. Wake up three hours before race start time
2. Eat what I’m going to eat on race day (bagel with pb&j and coffee)
3. Put on clothes (I lay them out the night before so I don’t have to think in the morning)
4. Do light stretches and/or lunge matrix
5. Drive to start run (I use this time to either listen to relaxing music or silently visualize the run)
6. Get pumped up (lucky to have coaches to help me with this)
