MOVIE MONDAYS🎥: When confronted with creating the visual effects they wanted for the film Mary Poppins, Disney hired the engineer and inventor, Petro Vlahos. His process used a specific color for his chroma key screen which provided a much wider range of colors to be used in costuming and set pieces than other similar projects that used the color blue. Vlahos also engineered a camera containing a crystal that separated the subjects and background extremely accurately which provided a cleaner key than any other techniques at the time. Unfortunately the crystal inside the camera could not be replicated, so other film companies had to use the same camera and crystal used on Mary Poppins to achieve the same standard of VFX in their own films. Petro Vlahos would go on to refine and improve upon the chroma key technology which has come to be associated with many blockbuster films of today.
