Light up with the power of Wattage Wednesday. Kairos Power is developing an advanced nuclear reactor called the KP-FHR (Fluoride-Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor) that uses “meltdown-proof” TRISO (tri-structural isotopic) fuel particles and liquid fluoride salt as the coolant instead of water. This design aims to be inherently safe, efficient, and complementary to renewable energy sources. Recently, Kairos Power successfully operated a large Engineering Test Unit (ETU) for 1,000 hours using 12 metric tons of molten fluoride salt. This non-nuclear prototype is being used to test systems and gain operational experience for their Hermes low-power reactor, which could be operational in Oak Ridge by 2026 as part of the DOE's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. The ETU demonstrated key components like molten salt pumping and validated Kairos' ability to manufacture the salt coolant. In the near future, they plan to construct upgraded ETU versions culminating in construction and op...
