Amp up your week with Wattage Wednesday - where energy meets efficiency A reactor that helps with nuclear waste? The Stable Salt Reactor - Wasteburner (SSR-W) is a nuclear reactor design being developed by Moltex Energy. Most countries with nuclear power plan to store spent nuclear fuel deep underground; however, the SSR-W could consume and transmute nuclear waste, reducing the volume that needs long-term geological storage (and making 300MWe of power in the process). Operating as a fast reactor, the SSR-W is effective at transmuting long-lived actinides into more stable isotopes. Its liquid fuel allows for lower purity levels than conventional reactors, greatly simplifying the recycling of existing nuclear waste through cheaper pyroprocessing methods. The spent fuel waste from the SSR-W will be in solid salt form that can either be vitrified for very long-term underground storage like current approaches, or recycled further. This ability to consume and reduce the volume of high...
