In rural Burkina Faso and Malawi, families often spend hours each day fetching water from distant and unsafe sources, a task that is often done by children in the family, especially girls. This, along with the water-borne illnesses that result from drinking water from unclean sources, prevents children from attending school regularly, impeding their academic potential and graduation prospects. When The Sonder Project provides access to clean and consistent water by drilling a deep-water well nearby, this dynamic is completely transformed. With less time needed for water collection and reduced waterborne illnesses, children can attend school more consistently. This increased school attendance not only enhances their educational opportunities but also leads to better literacy, improved skills, and greater future employment prospects.
