Bees are making an incredible difference in communities in Africa and Asia. Did you know that elephants are scared of bees? Farmers who often have their crops eaten or trampled by elephants use what is known as “bee fencing,” or fences made up of beehives. Butterfly Pavilion works with local beekeepers and community members to provide hives, training, and beekeeping equipment. These bees keep the elephants away from crops while also providing honey that people can sell, making bee fencing a sustainable and safe mitigation method.
