Infant formula sales have nearly doubled over the past 20 years creating a multibillion-dollar global industry, partly because of companies’ aggressive and predatory marketing tactics. At the same time, the World Health Organization reports that less than half of all infants globally are exclusively breastfeeding despite extensively documented health benefits. To mark the start of #NationalBreastfeedingMonth and #WorldBreastfeedingWeek, we talked to Prof. Rafael Pérez-Escamilla, a global breastfeeding expert, about five science-backed facts around baby formula and breastfeeding. “Formula companies spend about $3 billion per year marketing their products,” Pérez-Escamilla said. “That is more than the World Health Organization’s annual combined budget for universal health coverage and population health promotion.
