“Was it a good day or a hard day?” This past June, this was the question that greeted Sika Henry (sikahenry) after successfully completing the 2023 Comrades Marathon, a notoriously difficult ultra in South Africa. Even with her background as a professional triathlete, this race was the first time in Sika’s career that she was unsure if she’d make it to the finish line. The race was run “down” this year, meaning Sika and 20,000 participants descended more than 6,000 feet for 90 kilometers (about 55.92 mi). Racing as an elite athlete in partnership with Durbane-based Phantane Athletics Club (phantane_athletics_club), Sika found inspiration in the community surrounding her. While the feeling of defeat amid her physical struggles was difficult to cope with, Sika leaned on these moments in the race and her resilience built over the course of a storied career.
