An important part of the PA Wilds are Working program is getting involved in the community. While I’m here I’ll be working with Big Maple Farms doing… well, whatever needs to get done. Big Maple Farms provides equine therapy for kids and adults with disabilities, raises cows, sheep and chickens and sells fresh produce. The owner, Amanda, is the 5th generation to run the farm. I work on screens all day every day, and one of the main reasons I applied for this program was to be able to get out into the real world and do something tangible - something where I can use my hands, get out of my head and just be present where I physically am. My family had a horse farm growing up, so there’s something really familiar and comforting about being in a barn. I stopped riding when I was a teen and then picked it back up again for a bit a few years ago, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to hunt through the barn for a lead rope.
