Located in Williamsburg, York River State Park runs along its namesake, the York River. This park is known for its beautiful landscapes, numerous trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and its lesser-known attraction– the Fossil Beach.
Many marine fossils are found on the beach and embedded in cliff sides. Millions of years ago, this section of the York River was 200 feet underwater, now the beach is exposed along with the marine life that lived during that time. Many of the fossils found along the beach can be dated back to 8 million years old, which excites both historians and wildlife enthusiasts who visit the park.
The only catch is that you can’t take these fossils home, so make sure you leave them where you found them for the next visitors to enjoy!
