Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin has made it clear that the Commonwealth will not participate in the IRS Direct File program, which is a free option for filing taxes. Democratic lawmakers had previously argued that participating in Direct File would simplify and reduce the cost of tax filing for Virginians.
In his letter, Youngkin stated that Virginia has not adopted the Direct File program due to the associated costs and the requirement for a legislative act through the General Assembly.
The Direct File program was rolled out on a limited basis in 12 states this past tax-filing season and saved 140,000 taxpayers an estimated $5.6 million in filing costs. For filers who are subject to state income taxes, each state must opt into Direct File for them to be able to use it.
