Is Chicago called the “Windy City” because it’s so windy? Well… yes and no. 🌬️🌊 Chicago is called the “Windy City” for a couple of reasons. The most widely accepted explanation relates to the local weather, particularly the strong winds that blow off Lake Michigan. However, there is also a historical and political origin to the nickname. 😳 In the late 19th century, Chicago politicians were known for being boastful about their city, especially during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Journalists from rival cities, particularly Cincinnati, referred to Chicago as the “Windy City” to highlight what they perceived as the bluster and bragging of its politicians. Thus, the nickname has both meteorological and metaphorical roots. 💨
