A fascinating part of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum’s historical steamship collection is a dinner menu from the German Oceanliner SS Europa dated July 20th, 1936, which serves as a tangible link to that significant event. After World War I, the SS Europa and its sister ship, SS Bremen, became symbols of a peaceful Germany. The SS Europa transported athletes and spectators during the 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics. The 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany were used for propaganda, and at that time, there were calls for a boycott of the games in the United States and Europe. A significant highlight of the 1936 Olympics was Jesse Owens, a black American track and field star, who won four gold medals and was the most triumphant athlete at the games.
