Let us protect, respect, celebrate and revere these incredible cats. Lions are a symbol, perhaps the symbol, that epitomises Africa more than any other of its wildlife. The roar of the lion invokes excitement like no other. Tourists pay big money and create thousands of jobs to hear that roar, and for a glimpse of a large maned lion. The lions’ strength, its commitment to the pride and its territory which it’ll defend to its death. Its care for its brothers and family. Characteristics which too often put those of the human race to shame. And yet we kill them for fun, in the name of conservation. And we kill these increasingly rare and ecologically valuable cats to protect common livestock that have encroached their hunting grounds. There is no need. There is no justification.
