In the wake of an executive order from California Gov. Gavin Newsom demanding the removal of houseless encampments, the city of Berkeley continues its collaboration with local nonprofit Where Do We Go, or WDWG, to clean up and support encampments without removing their populations.
Over the past two weeks, WDWG has aided unhoused individuals in cleaning up encampments on Eighth Street and Harrison Street, as well as Second Street and Page Street in Berkeley. It spends its weekends with unhoused individuals, helping them go through their belongings to separate garbage. Working with contractors and the city allows WDWG to properly collect and dispose of the garbage.
