Smith Mountain Lake is a relatively young reservoir compared to others throughout Virginia. It was created in the 1960s after a dam was made for the surrounding rivers. Since then, the lake has become a trendy recreational spot, so much so that a state park was opened 20 years later to meet the demand for visitors. Smith Mountain Lake holds the most water out of any reservoir in the Roanoke region.
