Small enough to fit in your hand, pygmy rabbits are the world’s smallest rabbit. Another fun fact: They’re the only North American rabbits who dig their own burrows. These mini-buns need continuous expanses of sagebrush for food and protection from predators. But their Sagebrush Sea home has been shrinking and fracturing due to livestock grazing, oil and gas extraction, invasive non-native grasses, and wildfire. In addition, an emerging virus first detected in pygmy rabbits in 2022 poses a serious threat to their survival. Pygmy rabbits were first proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act in 1991. They’ve been waiting for help for a long time — and we’re done watching their slow-motion extinction.
