Recent sightings of fishers in Ohio have been a very big deal. These lesser-known cousins of otters are forest-dwelling carnivores that can swim, run and climb trees. They were first spotted in 2013, following nearly two centuries since they had been recorded in Ohio. Those sightings have only ramped up. “As of February 2024, there are 40 confirmed observations across nine Northeast Ohio counties, with two-thirds of those sightings happening in the last three years,” says Jon Cepek, a Cleveland Metroparks wildlife ecologist. ✨ We’re getting a little wild at Cleveland Magazine this week. Over the next seven days, we’ll be sharing even more stories about Northeast Ohio’s natural animals, culminating in our September cover reveal. Happy Critter Week! 🔗 In the meantime, read more about the fascinating fisher at the link in bio. 🖊 Paris Mather 📸 iStock photo #cleveland #cle #critterweek your_wild_ohio clevemetroparks
