Ascending. What a way to kick off a brand new league. And American Legion Stadium dressed just for the occasion — almost eleven thousand strong to witness history and set an attendance record for women’s soccer in the Carolinas. It was a dream. Not only was it the start of our latest D1 soccer league in the country, but it also marked the debut of the first professional women’s sports team in Charlotte since 1997. All kinds of history. For good measure, the halftime break was used to pay homage to the 1984 Dallas Sting Women’s Soccer Team, the first-ever US squad to win a World Championship and fellow trailblazers in the sport. If that wasn’t enough, Carolina Ascent defender Vicky Bruce did the honor of scoring the first-ever goal in league history. It was all the hosts needed to walk away with three points and seal an unforgettable evening. The best part is, the climb has only just begun. Here’s to more uslsuperleague weekends like this one.
