💘Happy National Latina Day💘
When I was in the 5th grade and 10 years-old, I was told by my Math teacher that statistically all of the girls in our class were going to end up pregnant and drop out of high school and that all of the boys in our class were going to end up in jail.
We were a room filled with black and brown students. (I went to Field Elementary in the Heights -HISD)
Those words have stuck with me for 30 years.
And, in the pursuit of not becoming that statistic, I was the first in my family to graduate from college in the U.S. and I didn’t start having my kids until I was 28.
And, I have dedicated a big part of my career and the work that i involve myself in to empowering and supporting communities that have been marginalized due race and gender, socio-economic status, immigrants and first-generation.
As a Latina I hold the key and Power to what I know I am capable of and I will never stand down, or stay quiet! ✊🏾
