The Johnston Community School District Board of Education has approved materials to buy for an updated social studies curriculum — minus a handful of books that it believes could violate Iowa law.
District officials are working to develop and implement a refreshed social studies curriculum for elementary school students as they learn about geography and local communities, the country's history and their civic rights and responsibilities. That includes buying books for students to learn from and build their reading skills, which requires school board approval for the mass purchase of a full set.
Across two separate meetings, the school board opted not to purchase four books following concerns that they could violate two Iowa laws, Senate File 496 and House File 802, and a fifth book that was not available for review.
