Iowans hit with floods, tornadoes, derechos and other extreme weather this year have experienced nearly $550 million in damage so far, state and federal data show. Residents have filed 85,725 insurance claims to cover $480 million in damage, the Iowa Insurance Division says. In addition, nearly 6,400 Iowans have qualified for $60.5 million in assistance from FEMA — the Federal Emergency Management Agency, data released Friday shows. FEMA said another $6 million is being channeled to Iowa victims through its national flood insurance program. But the tally isn't completed yet, since the state's data for insurance on homes, farms, cars and trucks, among other coverage, runs through June and doesn't wrap in July and August. Those months saw storms that included a derecho and 10 confirmed tornadoes, the Iowa Insurance Division told the Des Moines Register.
