This past week as we visited our community farm in Burkina Faso, we were excited to catch up with Yamwaoga Sam, a farm member who we featured in one of our
#SonderStories last year.
Yamwaoga is mute, but she hasn’t let her disability stop her from continuing to work hard on her individual farm plot to maximize her yields, and support her daughter to attend school.
Thanks to the year-round irrigation that The Sonder Project supplies to the farm, Yamwaoga has now started growing papaya, an important fruit in Burkina Faso, in addition to her usual maize.
Papaya is an accessible crop for many farmers, with a relatively short growth cycle and year-round fruiting, enabling consistent cash flow and diversification for the land.
It’s also a very nutritious fruit, contributing to better health and food security for Yamwaoga and her community!
