They are old-time Rockland rivals in every sport. And during the opening day of Section 1 high school football practices Saturday, they clearly were already on each other's minds. The way Class AA leagues were structured last year, Suffern and North Rockland weren't in the same class. And despite North Rockland beating Suffern at the end of the regular season and having the better record, it was Suffern that advanced to the playoffs. But this season, both North Rockland and Suffern are part of a new eight-team power league. Instead of four teams making the playoffs from each AA league, the power league will send six to the AA playoffs. That doesn't mean, however, that either team is taking anything for granted. In fact, Suffern coach Daniel Muller indicated he believes the potential exists for multiple teams to finish with identical records, which would mean team-vs.-team tiebreakers being used to determine which teams make the playoffs.
