In a letter from President Michael Drake, the UC Office of the President, or UCOP, reaffirmed policies that prohibit protesters from wearing masks to hide their identities, in addition to a systemwide encampment ban policy for protests.
UCOP spokesperson Stett Holbrook clarified in an email that while there is no masking ban, President Drake’s policy addresses mask prohibition for those who intend to intimidate another person or group, or to evade recognition and identification when violating the law.
Following UCOP’s announcement, ASUC Senator Medina Danish, who represents the Middle Eastern, Muslim, Sikh and South Asian Coalition, expressed concerns on the “harmful” policy in an email.
