Naomi Osaka advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday after defeating the No. 10 seed, Jelena Ostapenko, 6-3, 6-2.
naomiosaka made a fashion statement during her first win against a top 10 opponent in four years, sporting a frilly look custom-created by designer Yoon Ahn for Nike.
“The inspiration that fueled the look for me — and this might be a Japanese term — is feeling like a ‘magical girl’ on the court,” Osaka said. “There’s a moment of transformation for me when I walk onto the court, and I have a lot of fun playing, so wanting everyone who sees the outfit to connect with that feeling is a really big motivation for me.”
She will play against Karolína Muchová of the Czech Republic on Thursday.
