Josephine Trainor’s orchestra performs in the Crystal Ballroom, June 11, 1920. Music has always been a key facet of life at the Palliser. Besides the hotel’s own house orchestra, many performers entertained at the Palliser in its early years. Josephine “Ma” Trainor (née Smith, 1875–1953) led an orchestra (eventually known as the Calgary Hillbillies) that played at the hotel during supper dances, afternoon “dancettes,” and the Cowboy Ball, along with special occasions. Before moving to Calgary in 1912, Trainor had been the official pianist at Government House in her native Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. After she played for a school dance in Calgary’s Western Canada College, students Clarence and Edgar Lougheed raved about her performance. Their mother, Lady Isabella Lougheed—the wife of Senator James A. Lougheed—reportedly helped arrange Trainor’s gig at the Palliser, which lasted for 15 years.
