Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Between 2012 and 2021, more than 650,000 people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses - the majority of which involved opioids. A Yale study published last year found that access to medication-based treatments for opioid use disorder saves lives, while abstinence-based programs can be more harmful than no treatment at all. The findings, the researchers say, emphasize the importance of ongoing medication treatment for opioid use disorder and should inform how opioid settlement funds earmarked for addressing the crisis are spent.
