Japanese Americans organizers set a precedent when they received an apology and reparations from the federal government for the imprisonment of Japanese Americans during WWII, after decades of advocacy.
Stan Shikuma, president of Seattle’s JACL, described the fight as “long and hard” for organizers who had to convince their community they could win and persuade Congress and the President to act.
Shikuma and other Japanese and African American survivors and activists gathered in March 2021 to discuss the path to winning reparations for Japanese Americans and the link between that movement and the current push for reparations for slavery.
