There is an inextricable link between the contemporary fight for reparations for descendants of slavery in the US and the decades-long advocacy by Japanese Americans that led to the federal govt providing individual apologies and $20,000 payments to survivors of incarceration during WWII.
Japanese and African American survivors and activists gathered in March 2021 to discuss past and present reparations movements, the precedent set by the imprisonment of Japanese Americans, and the path forward for reparations. While this recording is a few years old, the learnings and work continue today to repair systemic harms.
