Law enforcement officers arrested four people in Multnomah County Sunday under Oregon’s new law that restored criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of drugs such as fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, according to jail booking record and a police press release. The law, which took effect Sunday, eliminated a central component of Measure 110, the drug decriminalization experiment approved by voters in 2020 that data shows did little to move people into treatment. The Portland Police Bureau’s Central Bike Squad conducted a drug mission in and around downtown Portland and found at least five people with drugs that qualified for arrest under the new law. Of those, two qualified for deflection and accepted services and at least three others were arrested for possessing fentanyl or, in one case, fentanyl and meth.
