Summer belongs to the Fire element, and it is the time of maximum activity or greatest yang, which
means that it is a time of heat, outgoingness,
and moving outward in nature.
The Fire element corresponds to the organs of the Heart and Small Intestine. In Chinese medicine, mental activity is associated with the Heart — our
memory, thought processes, emotional well-
being, and consciousness are attributed
to the Heart and Fire element. The emotion of Fire is Joy.
When Fire is in balance, the heart is strong and healthy, the mind is calm, and sleep is sound. When the fire element is imbalanced, we may either lack joy (depression) or have an excess of joy (mania). Indicators of an imbalance in the fire element include agitation, nervousness, heartburn, anxiety, and insomnia.
In Summer, TCM recommends:
—Rise early in the morning, and go to bed later in the evening
—Rest at midday when the heat and Yang are the highest
