For decades Iowa has been faced with a “brain drain” as scores of young Iowans attend out-of-state colleges and remain there after graduating, or leave Iowa after completing their degrees at in-state schools.
A recent Iowa Workforce Development survey of 4,260 students at 43 Iowa colleges and universities — from community colleges and trade schools to the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and private colleges — underscores the challenge Iowa faces.
An increase in the brain drain would be a worrisome development for Iowa, where many businesses already see a worker shortage. A quarterly survey of Iowa's 22 largest employers by the Iowa Business Council repeatedly shows they consider finding and retaining enough workers to be their primary business challenge and a potential limiting factor to growth in the state's economy.
