Downtown Des Moines restaurant and bar managers and staff will receive training to combat sexual violence.
Polk County supervisors last month approved a $10,500 agreement with safebarshq, a Baltimore, Maryland-based nonprofit that trains employees in the hospitality industry to help curb sexual aggression and other forms of violence at bars and restaurants.
Their hiring was one of the multiple recommendations from a study on ways to improve the Court Avenue entertainment district and make it safer amid a string of violence in the city's core, though county officials hope to expand the training across other entertainment districts.
