Rai Benjamin, who graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 2015 and became an All-American at UCLA and then at nearby USC, is now not just a two-time Olympian but a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
Last month, he netted two of those gold medals. He anchored, as he did in the Tokyo Olympics three years earlier, the U.S. men’s 4x400 relay team to a win, and he won the men’s 400 hurdles final, beating world record-holder Karsten Warholm of Norway, who’d won gold to Benjamin’s silver in that event at the Tokyo Games.
Now, Mount Vernon will do its best to make sure no one forgets either Benjamin’s name or the fact the city is where Benjamin got his start in track.
Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9:15 a.m., Benjamin will join other athletic greats, as well as famed actors, authors, scientists and more in the high school’s Hall of Fame.
