UC Berkeley researchers have discovered a process that can effectively break plastic waste down into its original chemical forms, creating potential for new recycled plastics. About 57% of plastic is either polyethylene or polypropylene, as both are stable and durable. Those same properties, however, pose difficulties in degradation, leaving plastic accumulating in landfills. By using new processes, Henry Rapoport Chair and professor of chemistry John Hartwig, along with other campus researchers, are now able to degrade these plastics.
