In June 2023, campus Ph.D. recipient Sean Peterson and building renaming advocacy group RECLAIM submitted the proposal, citing the racist and misogynistic writings of the library’s namesake, Hubert Howe Bancroft. Peterson said in an email that Bancroft’s views first came to his attention while he was involved in running the Cal Falcons’ social media in 2020. A Facebook post suggested the falcon chicks be named after campus libraries, to which a commenter responded requesting a replacement for Bancroft because of his writings. Peterson felt the issue was particularly salient in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd.
