One of six still missing On February 5, 1958, during a training exercise, an F-86 fighter jet collided with a B-47 bomber carrying a 7,600-pound Mark 15 hydrogen bomb. The F-86 pilot ejected safely, while the damaged bomber made an emergency landing at Hunter Army Airfield. To prevent the bomb from detonating in case of a crash, it was dropped into the waters around Wassaw Sound, Georgia. Despite a 10-week search mission, the bomb’s precise location remained unknown. Initially, the government claimed the bomb contained a dummy trigger and posed no threat unless disturbed. However, a 1994 document contradicted this, revealing that the lost weapon was a fully functional bomb with a nuclear capsule.
