Imagine tiny, iridescent jewels gliding through the sky, embarking on one of nature’s most extraordinary journeys. Hummingbirds are among the earliest migrants to take flight each year. As summer wanes, they start their epic trek long before many other birds, setting off to avoid the coming chill and find the warmth of their wintering grounds. In North America, we have 23 species of hummingbirds, most of which are migratory. The Rufous Hummingbird, a champion of endurance, covers an astounding 3,000 miles from its breeding grounds in Alaska to its winter retreat in Mexico.
