"Our history does not begin in 1988." Brazil's Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on the "Tese do Marco Temporal" — a case that would allow Indigenous people to claim rights to their ancestral lands. A negative ruling could decrease Indigenous land claims and increase destruction of the Amazon rainforest, including illegal deforestation. President Jair Bolsonaro, who has a history of dismissing Indigenous rights, has said he would not allow any more Indigenous land claims. Scientists warn that escalating the deforestation of the Amazon, coupled with intensified climate change, could accelerate the "deforestation tipping point," turning the Amazon rainforest into a savanna. People from around the world are calling on Brazil to uphold Indigenous rights. For more information and to see the outcome of the verdict, check out @apiboficial as they continue documenting their demonstrations in front of the Supreme Court. #DearWorld #Brazil #APIB #indigenousrights #indigenouspeople #...
