Historic heat waves across southern Europe have given way to massive forest fires in the region. In just the last week, more than a hundred separate fires have erupted in Turkey, killing eight and displacing over a thousand people so far. A June report from the European Environment Agency said that climate change has increased fire dangers across most of Europe, with Turkey, Spain and Portugal at the highest risk. People in nearby countries have also been forced to evacuate this summer, with strong winds fueling wildfires through Lebanon’s pine forests and the southern foothills of Cyprus' Troodos Mountains. The recent heat wave of 115F (46C) has also threatened the power grid in Greece and caused forest fires near Athens. Even when fires are caused by people, climate change has made them harder to contain, with the consistently warmer temperatures creating more dry fuel.
