After two straight hours of high jumps that cleared the 2.37-meter mark, neither Qatar's Mutaz Barshim nor Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi were able to clear 2.39 meters. The two athletes were given the option to have a "jump off" for gold. That's when a moment of magic happened: Barshim asked, "Can we have two golds?" and their request was granted. The Olympians have been competing against each other for more than a decade and have experienced injuries that threatened to end their respective careers. The shared bond of knowing what it takes to recover from and compete after injuries helped make sharing the top medal an easy decision. At a press conference, Barshim said, "Once we finished with that 2.39 [meter] jump, [Gianmarco] just looked at me, I look at him, and we just understood...It wasn't even a question." #DearWorld #gianmarcotamberi #mutazbarshim #tokyo2020 #tokyogames #olympics2020 #sportsmanspirit #sportsmanship #sportsmanshipmatters #highjump #highjumper
