On Wednesday, in a new episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we’re speaking with cinematographer Tristan Oliver (ISLE OF DOGS, PARANORMAN, CHICKEN RUN). In addition to his work in stop motion animation, Tristan has contributed to live action projects such as POOR THINGS and the uniquely realized LOVING VINCENT, and he shares how he became involved in the latter and discusses the challenges of shooting models in the former. We learn how Tristan was initially interested in a career in acting, and he reveals how he connected with the legendary British stop-motion animation studio Aardman when they decided they wanted to start “making [their work] look good”. We also discuss how the studio approached making CHICKEN RUN, their feature debut, and Tristan reflects on the differences in animation style between Aardman and Laika, an American stop-motion animation studio.
