One of Mount Vernon’s favorite sons has come back to town. Olympian Rai Benjamin received a hero’s welcome at his alma mater Tuesday. Friends and family flooded Mount Vernon High School as he was honored with a spot in the district’s Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of other legends from the city. Present were a few of his biggest fans — his mother Jeanette Mason, Mount Vernon Athletic Director Bob Cimmino and Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard. Benjamin was later ushered by motorcade to the Mount Vernon High School track at Memorial field, which was renamed in his honor. He was greeted by cheers from the entire student body, waving pom poms of maroon and gold, the school colors. Benjamin is a two-time Olympian and a three-time gold medal winner. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 2015 and went on to become an All-American at both UCLA and USC.
