Details about a state-led operation to cull 170 elk on private land are now coming to light.
In January and February, officials with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources culled 170 elk on the Deseret Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit, which lies within the Morgan-South Rich Hunting Unit and is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The DWR says this was necessary due to an overpopulation of elk in the area, but the agency had previously tried to keep the operation a secret.
