The fight for climate justice is gaining ground – and more and more often, people and communities are challenging Big Oil and Gas companies in court.
A new report – titled Big Oil in Court – The latest trends in climate litigation against fossil fuel companies – reveals at least 86 climate lawsuits have been filed against the world’s largest oil, gas, and coal producing corporations – including BP, Chevron, Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies. These lawsuits seek compensation for climate damages, challenge false advertising, and demand emissions reductions. The number of these cases filed each year has nearly tripled since the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise was reached in 2015.
