Iceland’s stark geological landscape has served as a training ground for astronauts since Apollo. Now, the Artemis II crew have joined that long history.
NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, along with their backups, NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and CSA astronaut Jenni Gibbons, joined geology experts for field training on the Nordic island this summer.
They learned fundamentals of geology, tested tools, practiced expeditionary skills, and provided invaluable feedback to instructors who are building out training for future Artemis crews. While the Artemis II astronauts won’t be landing on the lunar surface, what they learned will allow them to make informed observations of the Moon from their unique vantage point as they fly by our planetary neighbor.
